It's not caffeine. It's sugar. [May. 15th, 2008|07:50 am]

[mood | high]

A couple weeks ago I posted about caffeine as it seemed to be having a rather potent effect. I haven't had caffeine for a some time now, but right now I'm experiencing the same odd altered state.

At breakfast I had a couple cups of decaff and assuming it wasn't a mix-up and really was decaff that suggests something other than caffeine is having an effect. The biggest deviation from the last several days is that I had one cup with a packet of sugar and that I had a muffin with a very sugary frosting. I'd never really noticed the "sugar rush" that I'd heard of, but maybe it was because I had a fairly high sugar intake much of the time. Now that I don't take in much straight sugar, it packs a wallop. It seems I have another reason to look out for sugary things. The feeling isn't bad, but it also isn't something I care much for.

I think I recovered after the shock of Dina's diagnosis of Elbow-Dysplasia. I have an appointment with a lady who does physiotherapy for dogs next Tuesday. On Monday I will ask for a second opinion... I'll visit a veterinary hospital here in Nuremberg which specialised in joint-operations. I heard that they are pretty good... there is a TINY chance that Dina could get operated on her elbows since there are 3 forms of ED and one is operable. I don't believe it but who knows what they say about the radiographs. Kaji fetched them today and I will scan them just to have some copies myself.

I also wrote to someone from griechische-vierbeiner.org and the lady said that we will find a solution. She wrote to the society in Greece and asked if her disease was known or if they concealed it. I hope I will get some financial aid in the end...

What amazes me is that Dina recognizes my worries. It's awesome how sensible this dog is. After I fetched her at the vet yesterday and I had some kind of breakdown she tried to comfort me with licking my hands softly while looking at me as sad as I was. Moreover she suddenly wants to lay by me on the sofa. Even when I'm not there she often lays there.

I couldn't stop her from running through the high grass when I took a walk with her yesterday evening. As long as she's able to do that I probably won't stop her anyhow. She has such a sunny disposition and I think she will be able to learn living with her handicap.

I am absolutely not kidding when I say that if I owned the Lady Peacock Couture Ensemble I would wear it out clubbing. Goth clubbing, naturally.

I would not be horribly upset if someone purchased me the second Sir Pheasant, either, but mostly because I suspect he'd make a wonderful model to draw...and.hellllo, he's naked except for that hat and cloak too, isn't he? Hah!

I also want the Sea Goddess Fancy Dress Wig.

I'll risk my machismo and admit that I cry sometimes at movies. "Ghost"? Cried. "Rent"? Somewhat cried. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"? Yeah, cried (shut up).

I totally did -not- expect the kiddos' performance of The Three Piggy Opera to set me off. But wouldn't you know it, there I was, sniffling away. Something about watching my kids perform something they've worked so hard on for the past couple months (and not only that, NAIL it. Perfect performance) just made me smile and tear up. Maybe it's being proud of them. Maybe it's been watching them grow. Maybe it's the saying goodbye.

I've got a framed picture of 'em that was a gift from S. , which is currently tucked in my lesson planner but will be going on my desk ay-sap. I wonder if they'll remember me too.

I think I'm still awake because I'm jazzed about graduation tomorrow. It still doesn't feel quite so over because I actually have a final in math next Wednesday (I love your scheduling, SJSU) and then a CPR class on the 31st, which my wonderful partner has signed up to do with me. I've got a request in for transcripts to be sent once grades are posted, and once those are in and I am CPR-tified, I'll send the paperwork in and get that little slip of "Hey, you're OK!" that I've been working the past five years for. Surreal.

I got to see the cardiologist today. And the testing shall begin. The first one is a Carotid Artery Evaluation, an imaging procedures. This is essentially to see what my heart actually looks like to see if there is any physical abnormalities or malformations. Weeee.

This is going to be pricey, like 800.00 pricey. In all things it's actually not that bad as far as tests go. I'm reminded of one of Baron's co-worker, were some of his medical test ran into the several thousands. I really hope I don't go there.

As such, the art sale is still going on! I'm going to start keeping a tracking goal up so that folks know what's going on. It's also for me to know how much I need to make things work.

Current Goal: 790/1200*rounded up (first visit $395, CAE $781)

These numbers will adjust as things are payed off.

Just a reminder - I'm open for B/W sketches 20.00 each!

And art that's still for sale!

I swear, I'll talk about something a little more cheery next time. Really. I will.

A million years ago, a crazy lady named Francesca Hoerlein created the little, fuzzy toy dog who was my constant companion from age three until I was nearly twenty and Billie landed on my head. Here is a video of Ms Hoerlein creating a brand-new puppet.

Speaking of childhood innocence and dreams, here is a behind-the-scenes video from Sesame Street, showing how the actors are placed, including some very funny outtakes. ("All you need, Telly, is a word that rhymes with...awww, rats!") It's primarily the modern actors, but still quite cool.

Is your brain sufficiently warped yet? Pop it right out of its socket and listen as the voice of Elmo sings "Lydia the Tattooed Lady" at Jim Henson's funeral (it's the second song in). It is delightful to hear Elmo sing such a ribald and suggestive tune; charming to see such a wonderful tribute; and unnerving to see humans speaking with familiar Muppet voices. (Elmo, of course, is played by a large and imposing adult male :) (Also view Part 2, which is unbelievably sweet.)

LJ advisory board elections [May. 15th, 2008|02:56 am]

http://community.livejournal.com/lj_election_en/

Most people don't seem to know about this. It's like Livejournal Survivor or some shit. It's shaping up to be epic.

The 80s network admin beard candidate
The pro-ana candidate
The proud asshole candidate
The rating community scenester e-whore
The overly diverse girl
The stereotypical girl of average intelligence
The british goth
The unnotable girl who says the same things as everyone else
The abstract artistic symbolistic guy
The furry
The other unnotable girl
The candidate who runs a competing service
The photography guy
The e-popular gay drama queen
The Harry Potter fandom chick
The programmer nerd
The gimmick journal
The Toronto bloc chick
The guy who takes photos of women's breasts a lot
The completely normal and baseline guy who mods in some popular communities
The other other unnotable girl
The girl who wants to make sure everyone knows she's a girl by including the word 'female' in her LJ username
Another fandom candidate
Another 80s UNIX beard
The activist chick
The pregnant/pregnancy advocacy/women's rights chick
TRON GUY
The unremarkable candidate who everyone will forget about
A user rights advocate and fandom flag-waver still butthurt over the strikethrough crisis
Another also-ran
The first person to post looking for votes

Seriously this group of people would be so fucking perfect to put on an island fighting with one another and voting each other off until only one or two were left standing. It'd whip the crap out of the carefully selected people they use for Survivor these days. Watching Tron Guy sweating and fumbling along the beach in that spandex... watching the fandom chicks clawing each other over who lost his virginity first.. Harry or Malfoy... the ratings. It would be the greatest thing in internet history. Livejournal should have arranged it. Maybe they can have a rumble in Istanbul every year.

There are times when people (specifically this time around being my roommate Aaron) make me wish that I had taken up the offer made many years ago by my old friend Dan "Dumptruck" Conway and gone with him to professional wrestling school. That way when they try to 'help' me with something I could do both them and me a favor and slap a sleeper hold on them, knocking them out before yet another piece of stupid escaped their mouths.

Case in point earlier today: I'm getting the final bits ready for work, and then he opens his mouth, and the following piece of idiocy escapes his lips: "You know, if you wanted to feel better about yourself, you could calculate all the money you're saving by taking the bus to work instead of driving."  I wanted to give him a good old-fashioned Tombstone piledriver right then and there.

But you know what? Let's do something radical and crunch those particular numbers, shall we?

So for all you mass-transit folks out there: The next time someone tells you about how much money you're saving?  Give 'em a German suplex for me,  would ya?

Thank you! And a badge [May. 14th, 2008|10:57 pm]

thornwolf
Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes, and well...remembering my birthday :3 I usually hint shamelessly but this year I was shocked at how many people actually acknowledged it when I hadn't said anything. Thank you, it meant a lot and made what would have otherwise been a very mundane and stressful day into something special :) Well that and [info]vantid took me to Red Lobster where I put both coconuts and shrimp on the endangered species list.

And now, just to show you another style of badge I will be offering at Califur, inked badges for $25! This one is for [info]panth because he's always offering me drinks and being such a help to both [info]vantid and I at cons.

Panth the Mixologist

So the rundown:
Pencil Badges: $15
Ink Badges: $25
Toony Badges: $35 (full body)
Marker and colored pencil badges: $45 They look like this Silverfoxwolf Real Media Badge

And the super-deluxe watercolor/colored pencil badges are $65, but I take those home to work on them.

So, lots of choices, kids!

See you there!

Oh and I should maybe (or maybe not) mention that for my birthday I got myself a fish.

...

I named him Frasier. He's a very pompous betta. Fits! :D *obsessed*

Gene Colan [May. 15th, 2008|01:24 am]

[Tags|]

The veteran comic book artist Gene Colan is suffering from liver failure, and there have been a number of postings and updates and efforts on the artist's behalf launched over the last few days that I wanted to link to in case anyone reading is unaware of what's happening and would like to pitch in. I meant to post about this earlier but got sidetracked by the Ben's Charity debacle and work.

The simplest thing anyone interested can do is drop Mr. Colan a card or letter just to cheer him up. Well-wishes, sympathy, thanks for a lifetime of fine work enjoyed, whatever. The details, as well as a letter on the subject from Mr. Colan's wife, can be found here.

Beyond that, apparently the health issues being faced by the Colan family has taxed them financially, and there are several ways folks can help out if they can and choose to do so.

Art by Gene Colan is being auctioned off here.

Direct donations can be sent to the Colans through Paypal. The Colans are registered at genecolan@optonline.net .

I made a small donation. I wish I could have sent more. I don't know anyone who has a bad word about the Colans (we've met them briefly at two local conventions over the years and they were just simply swell folks), and if I had a dime for every person involved in comics who was a fan of Gene Colan's lovely artwork, I'd have a nice big fat check to send them.

Personally, I have tremendously fond memories of growing up on rich, non-house style Colan artwork on Daredevil, Iron man, and especially, especially, Howard the Duck, a comic I loved and was likely heavily influenced by in some way, shape or form. Steve Gerber has passed on, and Gene Colan is ill, and I'm heartsick and wish I had Todd McFarlane money. Or a way to get George Lucas to cough up a few grand in spare change lying around the couches at Skywalker Ranch as a way to apologize for the Howard the Duck "movie".  And, hey, Marvel, yeah, it would be nice if they chimed in, but Marvel and DC suits don't necessarily act like heroes, they just make money off them. Okay, the cynicism's starting to leak out, so let's tie this off and wrap it up before I get good and cranky about how the publishers treated the old-timer freelancers who built them up and created their characters, and the U.S health care system and industry.

Dirk Deppey's Journalista write-up with further links can be found here.

Tom Spurgeon's write-up at The Comics Reporter with further links can be found here.

If you're a fan, give it a think, won't you? Every $5 helps. Every letter brings cheer. Skip a few crossover comics this week and send the amount to someone who broke their hand working on hundreds of comics that looked swell and entertained a ton of people. We all say we love the older artists. They ain't getting any younger, folks, and most of them didn't make anything close to the money the Wizard Top 10 studs make working on the characters and concepts the vets bashed out like clockwork in order to pay the bills.

It looks like some big guns are coming out to donate items for a benefit auction, which is a great sign and hopefully just the beginning of a major effort on the part of comics professionals and fans.

Drop a line, transfer a few bucks. Show the damned love.

Officially official charity info. [May. 14th, 2008|09:23 pm]

califur

[blujaguar]
After talking with Z, it was decided that it would be better to not make it a surprise . So... what's so special that I wanted to tease people and try to get them to come to the EBFC last weekend to find out about it?

The item that will be up for charity auction during the cabaret will be *drumroll please* a membership to the EFBC! No, not one of those individual memberships that gets you free admission, nor an associate membership that gets you and everyone with you in for free for a year. No, I'm talking about a REAL membership; one good for all of your guests and yourself for the rest of your natural life. A membership that comes with a list of zoos in 26 states that will also let you in for free, and many will give giftshop discounts too.

This is a $2000 value (actually, worth far more I'd say) and you have a chance to get it for a fraction of that price, so be sure to get tickets to the cabaret if you want to bid! 100% of the auction proceeds will go to the EFBC, so bid as much as you can, please!

[music |Walking in a Winter Wonderland (it's stuck in my head)]

Last episode, our hero was dangling from the cliff of post-first date limerence, wondering if he was going to call, if the next date was still on, and generally being a nervous twit about the whole thing.

Well, today Kerry (that's his name) and I met for lunch and ended up spending the day together not only without incident, but -with- a lot of sparks and mutual crackle. I'm not going to fawn and expend gigajoules of New Relationship Energy in all directions until at least one more date. I'm not. I will however be looking into getting a ruby quartz zentai suit, just in case :B and if any of that means anything to any of you, you get a gold star for today. AND A COOKIE.

in -other- news, i'm booked :P tomorrow i'm seeing Mikey and possibly Michael and very likely Speed Racer. Then this coming weekend, i'm going to new york city to see Gary and Peter and to spend a day at SurTex, with an eye towards working that con next year.

i have a appointment with the owner of a local toy store/boutique next Tuesday about selling Paper Pals, so i need to get cracking on making the new set, i want to have it in production when i talk to her. i also apparently need to Srsly Look Into copyrighting -everything- before talking to her. or to at least get that ball rolling and the forms filled.

picked up my alumni card. and a t-shirt. i got a little "goodie bag" for playing, from the alumni office.
also, online chess is hot. So is finally getting over the gaddam flu and allergies. BAM!
there might be other stuff, but those are the important points.

OH YEAH, AND GET THIS: my RoomieDee brought home two(2) new baby kittens! They are cute as buttons. Mae Bell is mortified, news at 11.

Okay, so I'm not going to nag you about this, but I'll point it
out one more time and then shut up about it.

If you are in any way, shape, or form, visually inclined (OR NOT)
you need to go to http://icecreampeople.blogspot.com/ and get in
on this, download the "cone" blank and print it out, or email
dude and ask for a blank and he will -totally- mail you one.

If you work digitally Thass OK. Pep Sanabra's piece is all digital.
It's all good. And he's from Spains.

Check out the gallery, it's already coming along :) Sure the
Bill Griffith one is quite a coup, but my current favorites are
the one by Travis Lampe and the one by Brandon Reese.

If you -know- anybody who might be interested, pass this along :)

When the book comes out and it's all up in Juxtapoz and winning
the Pulitzer for HOT DAMN THAT'S FRESH, don't come crying to me.
Dis Meens Joo.

okay, okay... the Krang Cone is pretty slick, too.
